Harvesting technology

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Region possesses great wood resources. Thanks to severe continental climate, the woods of the region are especially durable and sound. The total territory of the state forest fund’s lands is 48931,2 thousand ha. The dominant type of vegetation cover is taiga, which occupies 87% of the territory, or 3,8 % of the forest fund of . Coniferous species are most widely spread here: pine, spruce, cedar, larch, silver fir; in deciduous forest there grow: aspen, birch, etc. The estimated felling rate at Soviet region is 3 051 000 m3/year, where 2 633 000 m3 are softwood.

“Ugra Saw Mills” performs logging activities mainly in winter time under short log (Scandinavian) technology with use of cutting-edge equipment — harvesters VOLVO and forwarders Ponsse.

The short log technology includes wood felling, skidding, removal of branches, and crosscutting into short logs of different length. The material is loaded into a self-loading forwarder, which, in its turn, reloads wood into a short log truck. After that, the material is delivered to production warehouses.

The main role in short log felling technology is played by equipment like harvesters and forwarders. In 2005, “Ugra Saw Mill” purchased 12 set of such equipment as a part of the regional timber industry modernization programme.

Harvester VOLVO is an excavator with an installed head Ponsse.

This machine is perfect for operating in the forest, as it has good protection characteristics and well-designed undercarriage. The harvester is used for felling, knotting, crosscutting and short logs bunching at the felling site. Global experience has shown that use of excavator-type equipment as a base for harvesters allows to carry out efficient logging activities with lower capital investments. The capacity of a harvester/forwarder set applied at “Ugra Saw Mills” is 6000 m3/month. Besides, this equipment is universal as it can be used for road construction.

Forwarder Ponsse () is a new high speed machine suitable width=100% for operation in the most difficult conditions. The forwarder with 13 ton capacity is used for skidding of wood at the most hard-to-get land areas. It has a very strong construction and maximum power. Well-designed proportions, pin-jointed frame and undercarriage ensure safe skidding even with full load (13 ton). The forwarder is a 8-wheel model with adjustable width=100% load clamp position for easier transportation of logs of different length.

“Ugra Saw Mills” pays special attention to training of operators, who work with new equipment. Training programmes takes from 5 to 20 days, depending on qualification of the personnel. Two months after the end of a training course, the operators take the so called “repetition” course, during which they can ask questions inevitable width=100% at the beginning.

Introduction of modern logging technologies at “Ugra Saw Mills” is an important part of the “Khanty-Mansyisk Timber Industry Development and Restructurization Programme”, it enhances rise of high quality export sawn timber.
