Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is a modern high quality structural material manufactured by using engineering technology to laminate several parallel grained veneer layers.
The term “LVL” was introduced in the 1960s by company Wayerhauser (USA), which designed the product and installed an LVL production line at its facilities. The concept of LVL production lied in the idea of unlimited length and high strength consistency of the material. The initial steps of LVL manufacture are similar to those used in the manufacture of plywood, but in LVL the grain of all individual veneers run in the longitudinal direction of the beam.
Today, LVL production experiences dynamic growth at the world wood market due to numerous advantages of this material. Global consumption of LVL increases by 5-10% annually; at the present moment it constitutes more than 3 mln. m3.
“LVL-Ugra” mill produces LVL beams of three types; depending on their characteristics, the products are marked UGRA S, Ugra Q, Ugra T. Also, the mill is going to start production of an extra strong beam type with use of larch – Ugra Lam.
UGRA S — laminated veneer lumber, where all veneers run parallel to grain. UGRA S is successfully used as structural elements of buildings and bridges. It can be used both in construction of new buildings and for reconstruction purposes since it can easily combine with older structures or replace them completely. UGRA S is the builder’s preferred choice for floor beams, headers, and engineering structures.
UGRA Q — laminated veneer lumber, where, on customer’s request, some cross grained veneers can be added, thus alleviating negative moisture effect. This product is perfect for constructions that require highly stable physical and mechanical properties of the material. Its applications include: floor panels, roofing panels, curved form panels, curved beams, stiffening panels.
UGRA T — laminated veneer lumber, where all veneers have longitudinal direction. But, compared to UGRA S, this type of LVL is produced of lighter veneer. Due to its straightness and dimensional stability, this product is recommended for such applications as studs of load bearing/ non-bearing outer and internal walls. UGRA T beams are well compatible with all types of interior panels. Panel installation does not require special tools and can be easily done at the job site. UGRA T allows to erect high and straight walls. Using it means quicker installation and higher efficiency of the construction process due to dimensional accuracy and stability, as well as strength properties and simple use of the material.
Success of LVL production is explained by:
— sustained quality of raw wood;
— absence of significant defects in quality of both green and dry veneer; minimal deviations in size;
— equal moisture distribution in the veneer right before adhesive application;
— compliance of bonding strength to international standards requirements;
— homogeneous and symmetrical structure;
— dimensional flexibility;
— the most efficient use of wood resource;
— product competitiveness against manufacturing costs efficiency.
Strict requirements to LVL strength characteristics ensure its effective use as a construction material.
“LVL-Ugra” possesses European and Russian licenses and certificates, which confirm that the product answers building norms and standards and is applicable for construction purposes. Laminated veneer lumber manufactured at “LVL-Ugra” mill is mainly intended for use in supporting structures, such as joists, trusses and other building products.
